Rangers’ Interest In £5M Dor Turgeman Isn’t Going Away

If there is one player that Rangers have been linked to for the best part of about two months, that Ibrox Noise has never really discussed to any major extent, it’s Dor Turgenan of Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Israeli international, 21, has a market value of around £4-5 million and has been long hyped as Rangers’ next star striker. With 20 goals in 44 appearances in Israel, his stats are not too bad, in all fairness.
However, we are a little concerned about the level at which he has excelled. The Israeli top flight is not exactly outstanding, and while there are a couple of teams, like Tel Aviv and Haifa, with reasonable experience of European football, Israeli players aren’t necessarily part of the highest calibre. Of course, there have been a few over the years. Naturally, there was that Berkovic chap at Celtic along with Bitton and Abada. Nevertheless, Rangers have had next to no Israeli players over the years. There was Boni Ginzburg, for those of a certain vintage who can remember back to the early 90s, but aside from him, not too many have curiously arrived at Ibrox.
Targetman would definitely be not before time, per se. In all fairness, his CV is decent. As we said before, he has a good stat level, even if the standard is not super high out there in the Middle East. His market value, around that £4 million mark at his age, does suggest there is something to him. He has also scored at Conference League qualifier level, which is the lowest tier of European football that is possible at senior level.
We don’t really know what to make of that one. That’s the honest truth. We can’t say he’s a dud, and we can’t say he’s outstanding. But Rangers do seem to be perennially linked with him. Whether there is real interest in the striker, we couldn’t tell you either. All we know is the name has been associated with Rangers circles for a very long time. His name basically surfaced with news that Hamza Igamane was looking like he would leave at some point this year.
Of course, as we know, Igamane has a move to Lille in the balance. He almost certainly will leave this summer. That may not be to Lille, but it may be to somebody else. Turgeman seems to be the natural replacement in many ways. Will he arrive? Time will tell.
For once, we’re not going to leap on a signing and say he’s garbage. As you will have noticed in the previous entry, we were actually slightly more impressed, for example, with Djiga, who looks to be a decent defender in all fairness and a high-level one. So perhaps the signings are starting to improve a little bit. As for Targetman, as always, time will tell.
