The squad rebuilding is in full swing at Ibrox with the signings of Joe Rothwell and Emmanuel Fernandez. However, Rangers are not done yet in the summer window, and according to The Daily Mail, they are now closing in on Luton Town midfielder Thelo Aasgaard, who only joined the Hatters earlier this year.
The 23-year-old emerging Norway international progressed through the academy ranks of Liverpool before plying his trade to Wigan Athletic at the age of 14. There, he impressed for the reserves and eventually earned a key first-team status in the Latics’ midfield. Although Luton spent £3m to tie him down in January, their relegation to League One would see Aasgaard move clubs again, with Rangers calling.

But the English side won’t let him part ways without making a monetary profit. The Light Blues have reportedly agreed a fee of around £5m for the youngster, thus handing Luton a financial boost in their bid to reclaim an immediate promotion.
Rangers have ample depth in the centre of the pitch. Recruiting Aasgaard would not only add quality but also offer a new dimension with his creative spark and versatility. Predominantly a ‘number 10’, the Norwegian has impressed as a box-to-box or deep-lying playmaker. He has featured a few times from the left, and even as a ‘False 9’ on a couple of occasions. But the gaffer, Russell Martin, is expected to deploy him as a midfield attacker, given Tom Lawrence’s exit following his contract expiry last month.
Both Philippe Clement and Barry Ferguson deployed Mohamed Diomande as a makeshift attacking midfielder throughout the previous campaign. While the Ivorian had his moments in and around the attacking third, the ‘number 8’ role suits his game more for his ball-carrying ability, vision and distribution attributes. Moreover, the growing interest from Everton and Besiktas is concerning for Rangers ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos later this month.
Meanwhile, a stellar 2024-25 season has brought Nicolas Raskin into the limelight. Wolves and Aston Villa are likely to engage in a transfer battle for the Belgian, and Martin, therefore, has already added Rothwell to deal with high-profile departures. Lyall Cameron has joined from Dundee, having signed a pre-contract agreement in the winter, and the Scotsman’s flexibility should restore parity in the middle of the park. Connor Barron and Bailey Rice have shown their potential, and it remains to be seen how the Gers’ midfield shapes up with Aasgaard’s arrival.
