Nedim Bajrami’s latest comments have added a fresh twist to Rangers’ summer window after the playmaker admitted he would “never say never” to a move away from Ibrox. The Albanian international only joined Rangers this summer but already there is talk about his long-term future at the club. His comments came during a recent interview where he was asked about his ambitions beyond Rangers and he left the door open to a potential exit.
It is not unusual for foreign players to see Rangers as a platform to reach a higher level and Bajrami’s wording suggests that although he is happy in Glasgow he still sees his future possibly lying elsewhere. For Rangers fans hoping to build around a core of talented players this attitude may feel like a red flag. The days of long-term loyalty are fading fast in modern football and Rangers have seen plenty of examples in recent years.
The former Sassuolo man has already impressed in flashes during pre-season training and there is no doubt he brings flair and creativity that Rangers were sorely lacking last season. He is expected to play a major role in the new-look midfield alongside the likes of Mohamed Diomande and Nico Raskin. But his openness about a possible departure has raised eyebrows especially after just arriving.
Supporters will remember how Raskin himself was clear that Rangers were only a stepping stone and Cyril Dessers’ possible exit proves that no one is safe from the transfer churn under the new board. There is clearly a theme of short-termism around the club at the moment which does not always allow for building a settled squad. Even in wider squad discussions, major exits are on the cards which will keep fans on edge all summer.
It will be interesting to see how the new manager integrates Bajrami into his plans especially with plenty of movement expected over the coming weeks. The midfielder’s words may simply be a diplomatic way of keeping options open but they could also hint at a player who already sees Rangers as a brief stop.
As always the Ibrox crowd will respond to performances not interviews. If Bajrami delivers on the pitch few will care what he says off it. But for now his statement only fuels the narrative of Rangers being a launchpad not a destination.
