Real Salt Lake has announced the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael Cabral for the upcoming season. At 34 years old, with a contract running until 2026, Cabral arrives as a key figure, bringing both technical expertise and strong leadership qualities. Having played for top clubs like Santos, Napoli, Cruzeiro, Grêmio, and Reading, he has over 450 career appearances and has delivered in high-pressure moments, including helping Santos win the 2011 Copa Libertadores.
Kurt Schmid, Real Salt Lake’s director of soccer, expressed his confidence in the impact Cabral will have on the team. He emphasized the goalkeeper’s blend of technical skill and leadership, both on and off the field. According to Schmid, Cabral will bring much-needed stability to the defense while also motivating the younger players on the roster.
“Based on his recent performances, we’re confident he’ll provide strong leadership in the locker room, instill confidence in our backline, and act as a mentor for our young goalkeepers,” Schmid said.
For a club focused on solidifying its defense and becoming more competitive, Cabral’s signing reflects a commitment to stability. He is not only a valuable short-term addition, but also a mentor to players like Mason Stajduhar, who recently joined from Orlando City.
Cabral has consistently performed at a high level, facing some of the best forwards in Serie A and competing in European tournaments. During his time at Santos, he played a pivotal role in the team’s historic Copa Libertadores triumph.
In his introduction, Cabral shared his enthusiasm and readiness to contribute:“I’m here to help on and off the field with my experience. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot as well. My goal is to support the team in any way the club needs me, both as a leader and as a player.”
Cabral’s arrival is part of Real Salt Lake’s broader efforts to strengthen the squad ahead of the new season, which kicks off in February against the San Jose Earthquakes. With a refreshed roster and strategic signings, the team is aiming for a competitive MLS campaign.
As a defensive anchor, Cabral is expected to bring consistency and quality to a backline that has lacked stability. His professionalism and international experience will also be invaluable in managing high-pressure situations.
The real challenge for Real Salt Lake now is turning these roster upgrades into on-field success. With an experienced leader like Cabral on board, the club is optimistic about a smooth transition and a promising season ahead.
