Isaac Hayden played his part in Queens Park Rangers remaining in the Championship last season and the latest news surrounding the midfielder could see him return to Loftus Road this summer.

Hayden moved to West London on loan from Premier League side Newcastle United in January and helped to transform the R’s into an upwardly mobile side under new boss Marti Cifuentes.

The former Hull City man’s presence and experience in the middle of the park was influential in the Hoops’ survival bid, so much so that he only tasted defeat four times during his spell with the club.

And with news coming out this week that the Magpies are prepared to rip up his contract this summer and allow him to leave the club for free, a summer reunion could be on the cards ahead of the next campaign.

Isaac Hayden thrives under Marti Cifuentes in Queens Park Rangers’ remarkable Championship turnaround

Having made the move to St James’ Park in 2016 from Arsenal, Hayden has featured more than 150 times for the Tyneside outfit, but has recently fallen out of favour at the club he helped achieve promotion to the Premier League with in 2017.

The midfielder didn’t feature at all for United in the previous campaign, with a loan spell with Belgian side Standard Liege to start his season, before returning to England and moving to QPR in the January transfer window.

The move to West London seemed to reinvigorate the 29-year-old, as he gave the R’s a solid base at the heart of midfield, and allowed his teammates to play without fear for the second-half of the season, and achieve their goal of Championship survival.

A return of 1.82 points from his appearances in blue and white says it all, with his performances giving the backline that extra layer of defence, as he mopped up any loose balls and stopped opposing attacks on a regular basis.

Journalist Darren Witcoop has already confirmed that Rangers are interested in a return for the former Norwich City loanee, and that will likely intensify once any agreement with Newcastle is confirmed.

Hayden has also gone on record stating that he would relish a return to Loftus Road, in an interview with The Sun earlier this year. He said: “Things move quickly in football and you move on. But it's a situation where myself and the club will have to sit down in the summer and discuss what they want to do.

“I had to take a pay-cut to go to QPR, which I was happy to do for the last few months of the season, to get games.

“But it’ll be back to square one in the summer but hopefully I can help keep QPR up and would love to stay here if possible.”

Queens Park Rangers could face transfer battle in bid to re-sign Isaac Hayden

Rangers had to fight off a number of fellow Championship sides to get their hands on Hayden earlier this year, and could be in line for another tussle once the midfielder becomes a free agent this summer.

Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion and Millwall were all said to be interested the 29-year-old, according to a report from Football Insider, and after his string of impressive performances at Loftus Road that clamour is only going to intensify.

The familiarity of Cifuentes [pictured] and the style of football he wants to play will make a huge difference once offers are made this summer, with the Spaniard likely to make Hayden one of the first names on the team sheet after his assured performances in the engine room.

Hayden’s return to Loftus Road would be a real statement of intent ahead of the upcoming campaign, with the R’s holding lofty ambitions after such a strong end to the campaign, and once his departure from St James’ Park is confirmed that could become a much more likely possibility.
