Saturday's matchup between these two MLS Western Conference foes may eventually be featured during the league's Rivalry Week. As for this season, it takes place a week afterwards.
The Los Angeles Galaxy have looked their best the past two games out. They have scored twice in both games. However, that still wasn't good enough to earn their win of the season.
After blowing a 2-0 lead against the Philadelphia Union, the LA Galaxy lost 3-2. They showed even more fortitude when netting a 2-2 draw vs. their rival, LAFC (2-2).
Last weekend, San Diego FC played to a scoreless tie against another team at the bottom of the MLS Western Conference standings in Sporting Kansas City. Before that game, the newcomers to the league had scored nine total goals in their previous three games (3-0-0).
Kickoff is at 1:45 p.m. (PT) and 3:45 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, May 24. This game will mark the first time that the Los Angeles Galaxy play at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, California.
This game will be aired nationally on Fox Television and Fox Deportes (Espanol). It will also be available on MLS Season Pass, in addition to Apple TV and Apple TV+ formats.
Both teams have played 14 games entering the weekend with their first one being against one another.
Head Coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy, Greg Vanney, has since been extended. He signed a three-year extension through the 2028 MLS season earlier in the month. His team lost the season opener at home against San Diego FC.
The LA Galaxy are still winless as their opponent on Saturday currently is the third best team in the MLS Western Conference. Novak Micovic was the Galaxy's starting keeper in the season opener. Following three straight losses to begin the new year, he was replaced by John McCarthy.
The defending champions could not produce on offense against San Diego. Instead, Andres Dreyer provided all the game's firepower. He found the back of the net twice. Dreyer has six scores and as many assists on the year.
"For me, like honestly, I don't care who is in the goal. I don't really care about against we are playing for me just about our team, how we can build from the recent games into the next games, and yeah, nothing changed. We didn't win this game. We wanted it to bad, especially for the fans."Marco Reus, LA Galaxy midfielder
Marco Reus has pretty much been the LA Galaxy's version of Dreyer as of late. At the beginning of this month, he produced a pair of assists in the 3-2 loss against the Philadelphia Union.
Last weekend against LAFC, Reus supplied both goals during Rivalry week. This led to the LA Galaxy collecting their fourth draw of the season. Unfortunately, the six-time MLS Cup winners are not only winless, but historically, they are off to the worst start to a season in league history.
If the LA Galaxy look to end being on the wrong side of history, they need to win against newcomers San Diego FC. A victory ties this new rivalry up, 1-1. Another loss extends misery against San Diego and to the 30th MLS regular season.
