The Danish national team manager is said to be the Clarets' newest hope in succeeding Vincent Kompany

Burnley are said to be closing in on a deal to bring current Denmark national team manager Kasper Hjulmand to the club.

A report from HITC states that the Clarets have made the 52-year-old their top target, following his side’s exit from Euro 2024 at the hands of hosts Germany at the weekend.

The Turf Moor outfit are still looking to replace outgoing boss Vincent Kompany, who departed the club for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in May, following his side’s relegation from the Premier League after just one season in the top flight.

Carlton Palmer: Potential Burnley appointment of Kasper Hjulmand would be impressive

Former England international player turned pundit Carlton Palmer believes the appointment of Hjulmand could be a wise choice for the Lancashire side this summer, as they look to return to the top flight at the earliest opportunity.

Hjulmand has been in charge of the national side since August 2020, with one World Cup and two European Championship campaigns under his belt during that time.

The former Nordsjaelland coach was in the dugout as the Danes went toe-to-toe with England in Euro 2020, with Harry Kane’s extra-time penalty rebound earning the Three Lions a 2-1 victory en route to the Wembley final.

The Scandinavian outfit exited the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the group stage, before their most-recent major finals exit came on Saturday, as they went down 2-0 to Germany in Dortmund following goals from Kai Haverts and Jamal Musiala.

In total, Denmark have a 60% win ratio with Hjulmand at the helm, which goes to show his influence on the side, and if he were to move to Turf Moor, Palmer likes the look of what he has seen this summer.

Speaking exclusively to FLW, Palmer said: “The reports coming out of Burnley is that they are very close to appointing Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand as their new manager.

“There has been a lot of rumours about who would be the next manager of Burnley, a lot of names have been linked with the post - Ruud van Nistelrooy, Craig Bellamy - but it seems the search for a new manager is coming to an end.

“Although he has been manger of Denmark since 2020, it’s believed that he will be stepping down from that role, and he’s going to be appointed as the new manager of Burnley.

“I thought Denmark were pretty impressive in Euro 2024, and very unlucky to go out. You could see they were well-disciplined, well-organised, and well-coached.

“So I think he would be a good appointment for Burnley, and they will be looking to get promotion as soon as possible back to the Premier League.”

Hjulmand becomes Burnley managerial front-runner after Ruud van Nistelrooy, Frank Lampard links

Hjulmand becomes the latest name to be linked with the vacancy at Turf Moor this summer, following the likes of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Frank Lampard with being linked to the Clarets’ hotsteat.

Former Manchester United striker van Nistelrooy [pictured] was said to have been interviewed by the Burnley chiefs last month, although the Dutchman has also been linked with a move back to Old Trafford in a coaching capacity.

Former Derby County boss Lampard was also said to have been spoken to during the interview process in the north west, as the ex-England international looks for a return to football after his interim spell in charge of Chelsea at the end of the 22/23 campaign.

As well as the aforementioned duo, West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan has also been linked to the role, although the Clarets now look to have their next appointment well within their sights, with Palmer confident the club are making a strong appointment.
