Presnel Kimpembe (29) has not played a minute of football since February 2023, however, he can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The Paris Saint-Germain centre-back was injured back in February of last year and required surgery on an achilles tendon injury. The surgery did not yield the desired result. Nonetheless, the Frenchman tried to get back on the pitch, but without success. As a result, he underwent further surgery at the end of last year.
“Never in my life did I think that I would go almost two years without playing,” began Kimpembe in an interview with Canal Plus. “All I wanted was to be with the team because I’ve had a good year-and-a-half on the side […] I managed to stay close to the team by making the away trips in the Champions League, and by going to all of the matches. I brought them my support, they gave me theirs.”
Since the injury, Kimpembe has, naturally, not been seen on a football pitch, but prior to this interview, he had also refrained from speaking through the media. He will be looking to break back into the PSG defence, which will not be an easy task. Marquinhos and Willian Pacho are cemented as the first-choice options, whilst Luis Enrique also has Milan Skriniar and Lucas Beraldo at his disposal.
“In all the teams that I’ve played, there has been competition. I had it when I arrived and I’ll have it again now,” said Kimpembe. He revealed that he has also remained in touch with Didier Deschamps and re-earning a spot in the France set-up is one of his objectives.
Whilst Kimpembe, who is now training with the first team at PSG, is nearing a return. No exact date has yet been provided.
