Our Premier League Team of the Week from the weekend’s action, featuring a Bournemouth trio and Newcastle’s goal machine.
A solid showing from Stolarczyk who helped Leicester end their torrid run at Spurs. He got strong hands to a fierce hit from Pedro Porro and did brilliantly to turn Son Heung-min’s curling effort around the post. The Pole commanded his box well at set pieces as Leicester dug deep to claim a precious three points.
There isn’t a right-back that can do what he does. Effortlessly classy as Liverpool eased to a 4-1 win over Ipswich, with the highlight a customary assist whipped perfectly onto the head of Cody Gakpo. Criticism of his defending can be just, but there’s no doubt he’ll be a major miss to Liverpool – and the Premier League – if he leaves this summer.
A perfect response to his error against Rangers. Maguire relished his duel with Raul Jimenez and excelled in his best role as a box defender. He won 100% of his tackles and ground duels at Craven Cottage and was assured in his distribution. An important three points on the road for Manchester United.
Jarrad Branthwaite looked back to his best as Everton held firm to frustrate Brighton. A clean sheet and three points continues a strong start for David Moyes, with Branthwaite excellent alongside James Tarkowski. He racked up 13 clearances, blocked two shots, and won 4/5 defensive duels in a big performance.
A crucial goal and a big performance from the Italian, having lost his place in the side to Myles Lewis-Skelly. On as a substitute, Calafiori shored things up for the Gunners and barely misplaced a pass. He took his winner at Wolves like a seasoned striker.
Tyler Adams has quietly gone under the radar as part of Bournemouth’s in-form side. Since returning from injury in October, the American has led the Premier League for tackles and interceptions per 90. He was a standout in the 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest, recording two assists, making five tackles, and winning 5/6 ground duels. Adams deserves his flowers.
Justin Kluivert is a man in real form right now. The Dutchman made it five goals and two assists in his last three Premier League appearances as Bournemouth hammed Nottingham Forest on the south coast. He has shone in an advanced midfield position and blasted in the opener from distance. Kluivert was cruelly denied a wonderful second by the offside flag, after a neat interchange with Dango Ouattara.
Dominik Szoboszlai is in the midst of a fine spell at Liverpool. The Hungarian’s energy and running power has been crucial to Arne Slot’s side and he was outstanding again in the 4-1 win over Ipswich Town. Full of endeavour, he showcased his quality with a crisp finish for the opening goal and set the tone for Liverpool’s press throughout.
No striker, no problem for Bournemouth. Dango Ouattara has taken to leading the line in the absence of the injured Evanilson and Enes Unal and helped himself to a hat-trick as the Cherries thrashed Nottingham Forest. Andoni Iraola’s side are flying right now and sent a statement of their European credentials with a 5-0 win over top-four hopefuls Forest.
He leapt magnificently to head home his first, before steering in a second despite the attention of two Forest markers. Ouatarra reacted quickest to seal his hat-trick after Matz Sels spilt a shot to complete an unforgettable afternoon for the 22-year-old.
Alexander Isak took his total to 17 league goals for the campaign and 13 in his last 10 games with a double at Southampton. The Swedish striker is oozing confidence and calmly dispatched a penalty before clinically converting his second. The first touch that set him away for the second was world-class, from one of the best number nines around right now.
A fantastic all-round centre-forward performance from Haaland that will silence some of his critics. He linked the play well and bullied Chelsea’s backline on occasion, scoring one and creating another at the Etihad.
His goal came in route one style as Ederson’s long pass created the opportunity for the Norwegian. Sometimes the game does not need to be complicated. If you have the best goalscorer in Europe up front, get the ball to him as quickly as possible.
