The transfer window is enough to send football fans into a frenzy. Relentless speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, and even ‘in-the-know’ journalists getting it wrong.

After a torrid start to the season, West Ham fans must have feared the worst when news broke that Lucas Paqueta might be on his way to Aston Villa. A deal was all but done, social media said, only for the midfielder to emphatically dismiss a transfer this weekend.

After scoring from the spot at Nottingham Forest, Paqueta celebrated by pretending to answer a phone, before throwing it away and kissing the West Ham badge.

It’s been a troubled start for the Hammers, but news that one of their most talented players is committed to the cause will be welcomed.

Player of the Week

While some stars have sulked this summer in a bid to force moves, Marc Guehi has got down to business. The Crystal Palace captain has politely told his side that he’d like to pursue a move to Liverpool, without compromising on commitment to the cause.

Guehi starred as Palace won 3-0 at Aston Villa on Sunday evening, scoring a stunning goal and marshalling his side to a clean sheet. Should he get his desired transfer on deadline day, he’ll leave with the best wishes of the Palace fans after his commendable behaviour throughout the summer.

A cagey contest between last season’s top two at Anfield required a moment of magic to decide it.

Step up, Dominik Szoboszlai. We’re unlikely to see a better free-kick scored all season. Liverpool march on with maximum points, while Arsenal suffer a setback in their bid to close the gap.

Stat of the Week

James Milner is a machine.

The 39-year-old notched his first Premier League goal since 2019/20 over the weekend, leading to this remarkable stat.

Milner is now the second-oldest and second-youngest goalscorer in the league’s history, with his first and most recent efforts separated by almost 23 years.

A week to forget for…
