Manchester City 3-4 Al Hilal (aet)
Al Hilal produced the biggest shock of the FIFA Club World Cup so far by eliminating one of the tournament favourites Manchester City in a thrilling encounter in Orlando.
The match, which saw both sides lead on the night, was littered with Portuguese involvement, with João Cancelo and Rúben Neves ultimately getting the better of Rúben Dias, Matheus Nunes and goalscorer Bernardo Silva. The victory sets up a fascinating propsect of the Saudi giants taking on Brazilians Fluminense in the quarter finals.
Bernardo opens the scoring; Cancelo key in response
City came into the encounter as strong favourites and everything seemed to be in order when Seleção man Bernardo Silva put the English side ahead in the 9th minute from close range, giving his side a lead they held until the half-time break.
However, Al Hilal emerged from the interval full of vigour and in a remarkable turnaround found themselves ahead after a little over five minutes of the re-start. First, Cancelo’s ball from the right of the penalty area ended up with former Benfica forward Marcos Leonardo, who headed home just 41 seconds into the second period.
With City pushing to re-take their lead, Al Hilal caught their illustrious opponents napping. The ball broke to Cancelo on the edge of his own box and the experienced full-back played a wonderful pass through to Brazilian wideman Malcolm, who kept his nerve to fire a low finish past Ederson.
Neves the provider
Just minutes later, City equalised through Erlin Haaland’s close-range finish after a scramble following Bernardo’s corner, marking a sensational start to the second half with three goals scored in the match inside ten minutes of the resumption of play. There were no further goals in normal time, leading to an additional 30 minutes required.
Al Hilal again surprised their opponents by taking the lead for a second time. On this occasion, a typically dangerous Neves corner was fantastically guided in by the head of defender Kalidou Koulibaly. Phil Foden levelled things up again with a neat finish, but Marcos Leonardo had the last laugh with a 112th-minute winner to send the Saudi side into the semi-finals.
