See here for Portugal and Italy Euro 2025 odds, with late drama on matchday 2 shaking up Group B and keeping Portugal in the competition.
A last minute goal saved Portugal from certain elimination, with a dramatic end to the game also seeing a straight red card.
Neither side was able to break the deadlock on matchday 2 until deep in the second half but Cristiana Girelli’s finish in the 70th minute was certainly worth waiting for.
The Italy captain seemed to have plenty of options on the edge of the Portugal box but instead of passing, Girelli whipped a strike into the top right corner to give her nation a deserved lead.
It seemed for all the world as if Italy were going to hold on to their lead with stoppage time approaching but with their first shot on target of the game, Portugal were able to find a shock equaliser in the 90th minute.
Diana Gomes pushed forward for Portugal as they desperately searched for the game’s second goal and the defender found herself in the right place at the right time to flick a cross over the Italy goalkeeper and save Portugal’s tournament.
While the late goal was a surprise, Portugal definitely deserved to take a point home with them after having a goal disallowed and hitting the crossbar on two separate set pieces prior to Gomes’ goal.
There was more late drama deep into added time when Ana Borges was shown a second yellow card as she looked to break forward for Portugal who were searching for a late winner.
With Portugal’s late equaliser from Diana Gomes, Group B is now wide open heading into the final matchday.
The point for Portugal was crucial in terms of their survival in the competition, as a loss would have eliminated them from knockout contention and sent Italy through.
With a draw though, a win for Portugal against Belgium and a loss for Italy against the Spanish world champions and current group leaders would have qualification decided on goal difference.
Portugal currently trail Italy by six goals, but with Spain scoring 11 in their two games so far, it would be no surprise to see Italy dumped out before the quarter finals.
Both Italy and Portugal remain long-shots for Euro 2025 according to the UK’s best betting sites, at prices of 33/1 and 250/1 respectively to win the tournament.
Portugal are 6/1 to advance from the group, while Italy are just 1/10 to make the quarter finals.
