Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Round 24, 28/02/25
Mika Biereth netted his third hat-trick in as many home games in Ligue 1 as AS Monaco swept aside a lethargic Stade de Reims side (3-0).
It has been a recurring story at the Stade Louis II in 2025 with Biereth the centre of attention. His header, just wide, within the first 60 seconds was a signal of intent. Reims offered little but almost took the lead, profiting from a Thilo Kehrer error, but the German recovered in time to make a potentially goal-saving last-ditch challenge on Junya Ito.
Thereafter, Monaco ramped up the pressure. Biereth once again went close but didn’t get enough on Vanderson’s pin-point ball across goal. But the warning signs were not heeded by Les Stadistes as just minutes later, the former Arsenal man got his first of the night, volleying home at the back post from a Caio Henrique cross.
He got his second just five minutes later. Unpressured, he plucked a Maghnes Akliouche ball out of the air around the penalty spot, took a touch and found the far corner of Yehvann Diouf’s goal. Biereth almost got a third before the break but couldn’t direct a fizzed ball across the face of goal into the back of the net but he didn’t have to wait long for his third hat-trick in three Ligue 1 matches at the Stade Louis II.
This was the easiest of the lot. Diouf did well to save Breel Embolo’s initial effort but his parry fell to the feet of Biereth who was on hand to tap into the empty net. Both sides had chances to add to the score. There was a drop-off from Les Monégasques who afforded more space and Reims managed to test Radoslaw Majecki but was unable to beat him.
Monaco were in cruise control and comfortably saw out the victory, which allowed them to return to winning ways after the defeat to Lille OSC last weekend.
Radoslaw Majecki – 6
Caio Henrique – 6
Since his ACL injury, we are yet to see the same version of Henrique. This performance was a step in the right direction. It was his quality of crossing that distinguished him and whilst there were plenty of wasteful balls into the box, it was his sumptuous ball that found Biereth at the back post for the opener. The Brazilian was untested defensively.
Christian Mawissa – 6
Thilo Kehrer – 5
Vanderson – 6
Takumi Minamino – 6
Denis Zakaria – 6
Moatasem Al-Musrati – 7
Undoubtedly his best game since joining Monaco, Al-Musrati was afforded the time and space by Reims to play his game and show off his best asset – his long-range distribution. His long balls stretched the Reims defence and opened up spaces, whilst he was also crucial in setting the tempo.
Maghnes Akliouche – 5
Breel Embolo – 5
Mika Biereth – 9
The star man once again. He has a pure striker’s instinct for where the ball will fall in the box and he has the composure to stick the ball home. Not overly involved in build-up, he is the fox-in-the-box that was missing from this Monaco side. Another ruthless performance and with 10 goals (!) already since his move at the start of January, he could yet mount an unlikely challenge for the Golden Boot.
Yehvann Diouf – 6
Teddy Teuma – 5
