Manchester City supporters have received fresh optimism from Pep Guardiola himself that he could yet extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium even further.
The Catalan coach has long been the subject of speculation surrounding how much longer he will remain in English football, particularly as he enters his ninth season with Manchester City – already the longest managerial spell of his career.
Pep Guardiola’s current contract runs until the summer of 2027, but his own words have consistently been the most telling factor, with many interpreting his recent reflections as signs that he is enjoying a renewed energy at the club.
Last month, former City boss Stuart Pearce suggested Guardiola was “closer to the end than the start” of his Etihad Stadium journey, warning fans of the club to prepare for the eventuality of his exit.
That commentary, combined with the personal difficulties concerning his reported separation from his wife Cristina Serra, had only intensified rumours of a potential earlier departure. Yet, as City transition into a new era with signings like Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki, Guardiola appears to have rediscovered excitement for the project.
The manager has also been visibly encouraged by the spirit of his players during pre-season. Having already overseen a significant squad evolution following last season’s inconsistencies, Guardiola appears more positive than ever about what lies ahead, particularly after City’s Club World Cup campaign that ended at the last-16 stage at the hands of Al Hilal.
Speaking during a new and exclusive interview with Men In Blazers, Pep Guardiola has stressed his happiness with life in Manchester and even hinted at a possible fresh contract extension beyond the summer of 2027.
“I love this city. When you are 10 years in one place, it’s because you feel comfortable,” the 54-year-old said of his now long-standing home.
But when pressed on when he will feel as though a break from the game is needed, Guardiola said, “I have two more years, maybe I’ll extend two more years.
“So the question is when I will stop in this year or in two years, or in four years, I will take a break. But now I feel fine, I would say.”
Guardiola continued, “The team is giving me good vibes, starting from the [Club] World Cup in the United States. There we created something, I saw something that I liked, that we missed last season.
“The training sessions, the body language, the details, arriving on time, the backwards, how we defend throw-ins, stupid things that you realise the team is there! And that will help us to be, I think, more consistent than last season.”
This is the clearest indication yet that Pep Guardiola is open to staying at Manchester City for up to 12 years, and further cementing his place as one of the longest-serving managers in Premier League history.
For Manchester City fans, it will be viewed as a powerful reassurance amid conversation over a potential exit and transition away from the Catalan’s tenure in the somewhat near future.
Whether Pep Guardiola chooses to extend will likely depend on the balance between his personal life, professional motivation, and the progression of this evolving Manchester City squad, starting this season.
Should players like Tijjani Reijnders, James Trafford, Rayan Cherki, and Rayan Ait-Nouri carry this side into a new era, Pep Guardiola may feel he has another cycle to oversee before stepping back.
But even if 2027 remains his endpoint, the manager has made it clear that, right now, he sees no reason to slow down. For now, City supporters can take comfort that their manager is both settled and inspired – a combination that has historically spelled success at the club.
