Manchester City’s momentum took a hit in their FA Cup victory over Plymouth, as defender Nathan Ake suffered yet another injury setback. Pep Guardiola, while pleased with his side’s progress, now faces another selection dilemma in defence.
Manchester City’s FA Cup journey continued with a hard-fought victory over Plymouth, but the celebrations were tempered by concerns over Nathan Ake. The Dutch defender, whose luck with injuries has been less than ideal this season, was forced off at half-time, adding to Guardiola’s growing concerns in central defence.
Coming off the back of an impressive away win at Tottenham, City rotated their squad heavily for this fixture. Kevin De Bruyne, making a rare start since his return from injury, was instrumental in securing the win. The Belgian maestro not only found the net but also laid on two assists for young talent Nico O’Reilly, underlining his importance as City push for silverware on multiple fronts.

However, the night wasn’t without its challenges. Plymouth proved resilient, causing moments of uncertainty for City’s much-changed side. And while Guardiola’s men eventually navigated their way into the FA Cup quarter-finals, Ake’s premature exit cast a shadow over proceedings.
Injuries at this stage of the season are never ideal, but for Guardiola, losing Ake presents a particularly frustrating problem. The Dutchman has been a crucial figure for City, offering defensive solidity and versatility on the left side of a backline that has already been tested by absences.
With a trip to Nottingham Forest on the horizon and a quarter-final tie in the FA Cup looming, the timing could hardly be worse. Guardiola himself admitted the situation is far from ideal, telling reporters post-match:
“Now again we have central defenders out. I think we are going to miss Nathan.”
It remains to be seen how long Ake will be sidelined, but given City’s congested fixture list and ongoing battles on multiple fronts, his absence could have significant implications.

If there’s a silver lining in all this, it’s City’s squad depth – a testament to Guardiola’s shrewd recruitment strategy. The arrival of Josko Gvardiol last summer was met with great expectations, and the Croatian international may now have a more prominent role to play. Similarly, Manuel Akanji has proven to be a valuable asset since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund, reinforcing the wisdom behind City’s defensive reinforcements.
Guardiola has always emphasised the importance of squad rotation and strength in depth, and this latest injury setback will test that philosophy once again. The adaptability of players like Akanji, Gvardiol, and even John Stones could be crucial in the coming weeks as City continue to challenge in the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League.
Manchester City’s ambitions remain intact, but Ake’s absence poses a fresh challenge. With key fixtures on the horizon, Guardiola will need to carefully manage his defensive options.
The road to silverware is rarely smooth, and injuries are part of the game. However, if City’s past performances under Guardiola have shown anything, it’s that they have the depth, tactical flexibility, and quality to overcome these setbacks.
The focus now shifts to the upcoming clash with Nottingham Forest, where City will aim to maintain their winning momentum – but they may have to do so without one of their most reliable defensive figures.
