Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been labelled as “arrogant” by one former England manager following his historical approaches to some matches.

The latest comments come after the Premier League champions fell to 22nd in the UEFA Champions League table following a 2-0 defeat to Juventus at the Allianz Stadium in Turin on Wednesday night.

Goals from Dusan Vlahovic and Weston McKennie in the second-half of the clash in Italy brushed aside a largely lacklustre Manchester City performance and caused some real concerns over their prospects of reaching the last-16 in the competition.

And as part of Italian media’s coverage of the game, former England coach Fabio Capello and Premier League legend Paolo Di Canio have issued scathing attacks on both Pep Guardiola and City goalkeeper Ederson, labelling the pair as “arrogant”.

Speaking during Sky Sport in Italy’s coverage of the Champions League encounter, Capello admitted that whilst Guardiola is undoubtedly a legendary coach in the game, his attempts to steal attention in big matches through selection decisions have sometimes cost his team.

“Guardiola is a great coach, but he is far too arrogant and presumptuous,” said Capello. “At times, he has even lost trophies because he wanted to prove that he was the one winning and not the players, so he dropped key figures from the side in the big games.”

The former Three Lions boss continued, “That was, in my view, an attempt to take the spotlight and the credit away from his squad.”

As for West Ham legend Paolo Di Canio, he opted to turn his attentions towards Manchester City’s Ederson, and mistakes caused during games that come directly from the Brazilian’s “arrogance” on the ball.

“Ederson has talent, but he is so arrogant that he makes these mistakes due to sheer over-confidence and trying to show off, like a back-heel flick when under pressure,” Di Canio claimed.

Manchester City now turn attentions towards a crunch clash against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with Ruben Amorim’s side hoping to inflict further misery on Guardiola’s season and take the ultimate bragging rights on derby day.
