Barcelona’s midfield sensation Pedri played a key role in the team’s 3-1 victory over Benfica, a performance that earned him the title of Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match.

The UEFA Technical Observer Group recognised his influence in midfield, highlighting his ability to dictate the tempo of the game and connect the attack with the defence.

Despite receiving the award, Pedri remained humble and acknowledged that other teammates also performed exceptionally well.

He felt that players like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha could have just as easily been chosen for the accolade, given their contributions throughout the match.

“It could have been for Lamine Yamal or Raphinha, who deserved it,” he said after the match.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Pedri emphasised that Barcelona needed to remain mentally focused and execute their game plan effectively.

He pointed out that when the team plays quick, one-touch football and engages in one-on-one duels, it creates a style that is both effective and enjoyable for the fans to watch.

“We just had to concentrate mentally tonight and do the right job. I think when Barcelona play one-touch, fast, one-on-one football, it must be spectacular and fun to watch.”

Pedri’s current form

When asked whether he was currently playing at his highest level, Pedri expressed confidence in his performance. He believes that consistency is key to being at his best, and at this moment, he feels he is in top form.

However, he stressed that individual performances are secondary to the overall level of the team. In his view, when the team is performing well, every player naturally improves alongside it.

“It’s one of the best levels I’ve ever been at. When I feel consistent, I’m at my best.

“I’m very happy with my personal level, but the most important thing is the level of the team. When the team is in good shape, all the players improve too.”

What Hansi Flick expects from Pedri

Under the guidance of Hansi Flick, Pedri has been given clear instructions on his role in the squad. His primary responsibility is to maintain composure with the ball, ensuring that Barcelona’s fast-paced attackers receive quality service.

“I am asked to be calm with the ball. We have fast strikers who can do whatever they want, and my role is to calm them down and get as many balls as possible to them.

“They are the ones who make the difference. And also to work in defence like any other player.”

Pedri also shared a valuable lesson passed down by his father. He was taught from a young age that even if he wasn’t at his best technically in a match, running tirelessly for the team would always be a meaningful contribution.

“My dad always told me that even if you played a bad game, you ran for the team, it still counts.”

Efforts to avoid injuries and next opponent

Over the past seasons, Pedri has struggled with recurring injuries that have hindered his progress. To address this issue, he has completely adjusted his training regimen, focusing on methods that better suit his physical needs.

“I worked on it every day. I fundamentally changed my training method and chose a style that suits me better.”

As Barcelona prepare for the next round of the competition, Pedri is not focused on selecting a preferred opponent. He believes that only the strongest teams will progress, and Barcelona must be ready to face any challenge.

“The best will qualify, and we will wait and focus on La Liga now,” he stated.
