What three EFL clubs would suit a player like Patrick Roberts who faces uncertainty with his future at Sunderland
Patrick Roberts' future at Sunderland is on edge as summer arrivals creates heavy competition for the winger.
With the Black Cats earning promotion back to the Premier League after an eight-year absense, manager Regis Le Bris has been busy in this summer's transfer window, bringing in the likes of ex-Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, Premier League proven Simon Adingra from Brighton, and the young talent Chemsdine Talbi from Club Brugge to name a few.
It's no surprise that Sunderland's active nature in the transfer window, backed up by heavy spending, is Le Bris' statement of intent to keep them in the Premier League.
However, with more than eight new arrivals to the Stadium of Light, this has left well-established players for the Mackems such as Patrick Roberts facing uncertainty about his future at the club and whether minutes in the Premier League will be few and far between for the winger.
Roberts wasn't included in Le Bris' 'stronger' XI throughout the pre-season fixtures so far, according to the Sunderland Echo.
With that being said, a player with the attributes of Patrick Roberts should be receiving regular game time and, therefore, here are three EFL clubs that could benefit from Roberts' attacking prowess:
Hull City narrowly avoided the drop in the last EFL Championship campaign by surviving on the final day on goal difference to Luton Town. The Tigers have had an inconsistent last couple of seasons with a play-off push in the 2023/24 season followed by flirting with the idea of relegation.
Roberts could be the one to turn the tide in Hull's favour this upcoming season, as he would most likely be a regular starter and fill the void left by Joe Gelhardt, who has returned to Leeds after netting five times in the league on his loan spell.
With Hull City being under the new management of Bosnian boss Sergej Jakirovic, the Tigers are unbeaten in their last six summer outings and could be in for a promising campaign. With Jakirovic liking his teams to be resolute at the back and being quick in transitions, this potentially opens a gap to be free-flowing when going forward which Roberts could slot perfectly into.
Hull's frontline was constantly chopped and changed throughout the course of last season.
The stability that Roberts would bring on the right being available week in week out will benefit a club like the Tigers.
Despite a mediocre league position last time out with Queens Park Rangers finishing the season in 15th position, Julien Stephan's recruitment has been impressive with new arrivals in Peterborough's Kwame Poku and Burton's Rumarn Burrell and could add to this with a player like Patrick Roberts.
Having already got Karamoko Dembele on their books, the addition of Poku alongside Ilias Chair could prove to be a dangerous frontline for defences to deal with.
Add Patrick Roberts to the mix and not only does it bolster the threat posed by the attacking line, but it also creates healthy competition for places.
A good problem for Stephan to have.
Roberts' willingness to get on the ball could very much benefit QPR as they commonly operate with a front three or even if tucked inside as a free-roaming number 10.
Bristol City are a side that could benefit from a player like Patrick Roberts, who could add a spark of creativity in the final third next season after Liam Manning's side currently being on the up.
With Manning's style of football placing emphasis on being possession-orientated, this could mean a fluid attacking system for the Sunderland man to join, which could potentially result in more goals and assists for the 28-year-old.
As for Roberts' style of play, he's well known for taking the game to the opposition and has the experience and versatility to go with it, which could turn him into a vital playmaker for Bristol City.
This transfer would certainly create a buzz of excitement among Bristol City fans, who can picture Roberts linking up to assist Anis Mehmeti, who is renowned for his goalscoring ability.
