It is always interesting to gauge the mood of the Rangers fanbase when a name from the past resurfaces. Over time, perceptions shift and old narratives soften or harden depending on what the present looks like. That has certainly been the case lately as a former figure of major significance has returned to the Rangers discussion, bringing with it familiar opinions and long-held debates.

Sir David Murray’s legacy at Rangers remains one of the most controversial topics among supporters. Yet despite the claims often thrown about, the numbers from a recent Ibrox Noise poll paint a more nuanced picture. When asked if fans wished Murray had never been part of Rangers’ history, only 3% of the 400 (admittedly not a huge sample) who responded said yes. That is a surprisingly low figure given the years of criticism and the club’s eventual financial downfall. Even we recently acknowledged that his legacy, while imperfect, is far from black and white.

On the other side, 32% outright supported Murray’s time at the club. That is not insignificant. That level of backing in 2025 tells you a lot about the weight of memory and success in football. Under Murray’s stewardship, Rangers dominated Scottish football for a large part of the 1990s and early 2000s. The club invested heavily and signed some of the best players to ever wear the shirt. For many, those were the glory years and still hold strong emotional pull.

What may surprise some even more is that the overwhelming majority — 65% — sat in the middle. They neither fully endorsed Murray nor condemned him. This suggests that while some damage was done, the majority of the support now view his tenure with measured hindsight. Perhaps time has mellowed opinions, or perhaps Rangers’ present circumstances mean fans now reflect on past success with a bit more understanding.

Either way, the numbers are clear. Just 3% of Rangers fans want Sir David Murray completely erased from the club’s history. That is a far cry from the supposedly widespread disdain. The fanbase may be split, but it is not nearly as bitterly divided as many would have you believe.
