This season has seen a host of players struggle for Manchester City. Kyle Walker was one of those players and he departed the club for AC Milan in January. His departure meant that Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes were tasked with playing at right-back for the remainder of this season. The results have been mixed and right-back does appear to be a position that City will look to strengthen in the summer.
In the case of Matheus Nunes, he does deserve credit for his willingness to play a variety of roles for his team. This season he has played on a wing, in both full-back positions and as a midfielder. Since the January transfer window, he has primarily played at right-back. At times, Nunes has been serviceable, and on other occasions, he has been frustrating. Against Bournemouth, he was both in the same game.
Going forward Matheus Nunes added plenty to Manchester City’s attacking play at the Vitality Stadium. His cross in the 9th minute, which set up an Erling Haaland header, was superb. His overall performance was far from poor. Unfortunately, Haaland squandered the chance. But in the 20th minute cross-fieldd a dangerous cross field pass in his own half that helped create Bournemouth’s opening goal. That’s the frustration with the play of Nunes. When he makes an error they are generally costly. Throughout the game Nunes played well, but unfortunately his error does stand out.
That’s the problem with Matheus Nunes as a player. His effort cannot be faulted. He has been asked to play in a position that is foreign to him. At times that shows up in his play. But when he makes an error that also stand out. He has stepped up for Manchester City in their time of need this season. He deserves credit for that. Unfortunately, he appears to be guilty of trying to hard. If he could tidy up that area of his play he could grow into a good squad player for Pep Guardiola’s side. But he must fix the errors in his play so the focus shifts to what he is good at rather then what he gets wrong as a player.
