Official: Plymouth Argyle confirm managerial appointment of Man United legend Wayne Rooney | OneFootball

Championship club Plymouth Argyle have officially confirmed that Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney will be their new manager.

Rooney succeeds Ian Forster, who was sacked in April after an extremely poor run of results.

The job is Rooney’s first managerial role since he was relieved of his duties by Birmingham City in January after he lost nine of the 15 games he took charge of.

When Rooney took over the reins at Birmingham City, they were in the Championship play-off spots but were relegated to League One earlier this month.

Aside from Birmingham City, Rooney also previously managed at Derby County and in Major League Soccer at D.C. United.

Rooney will be joined at Argyle by first-team coaches Kevin Nancekivell and Simon Ireland, and goalkeeping expert Darryl Flahavan.

Further staff additions will be made in due course.

United’s record goalscorer said, “Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the Chairman and Board for the faith they have shown in me.”

Argyle chief executive Andrew Parkinson and chairman Simon Hallett also expressed their delight at having Rooney onboard.
