Sven Botman had surgery on his knee last week.
The Dutch defender will miss the rest of this season and then sadly it will encroach into the 2024/25 campaign as well.
We can only hope that this will prove as few months as possible, though the most important thing of course is that simply Sven Botman is able to return to full fitness and form, when he is eventually passed fit to play again.
A lot has been said about Sven Botman, regarding his injury and the surgery, with journalist, pundits and Newcastle fans amongst those giving their take on what has happened.
What I kept reading repeatedly from certain people, was how reckless and negligent the club and Eddie Howe in particular had supposedly been. The train of thought that apparently it was so ‘obvious’ Sven Botman should have had this knee surgery far earlier and the club and Head Coach had made a massive blunder in not doing this.
Well, a lot of people should be feeling very embarrassed now, if they have any honesty and humility.
Eddie Howe now having given a full official Newcastle United explanation as to exactly how this Sven Botman injury situation and eventual surgery played out…
“There is quite a complex story around Sven Botman since he got his knee injury.
“Initially, he had a partial tear of his ACL.
“We sought specialist opinion and there were conflicting reports on what he should do next.
“Ultimately, our medical team advised him to get surgery and he, himself, wanted to carry on playing.
“We’ll always try to guide and help the players, but ultimately, it’s their bodies and they have to make the final decision.
“Unfortunately, he succumbed to the injury eventually, but I’ve seen several players with that injury come back, carry on playing and stay fit.
“Of course, the medical team advised Sven Botman and all they can do in that situation is make a recommendation.
“Ultimately, the player felt his knee was good.
“Sven felt his knee was strong and he felt confident in it.
“He did a lot of work to get back, he sought specialist opinion and they helped him
“As always in these situations, we don’t have the benefit of hindsight.
“I wish we did.
“You can’t force a player to have an operation, no matter what an opinion may be internally [within a football club].
“The player has to allow his body to be operated on and Sven was very certain in his mind what he wanted to do.
“Once you have that position, unless you communicate with the player and make him change his mind, which Sven was adamant his knee felt good and he wanted to carry on, I think we have to support him then and move forward with the process.”
Honestly, for me this Sven Botman summed up what has generally happened this season.
As well as our enemies in the media and so on, certain Newcastle United fans desperate to go to any extreme to find fault with Eddie Howe and others at the club. You would honestly doubt at times whether they were / are indeed NUFC supporters, as they appear to revel in it when things are going against Newcastle United.
