Marseille have signed Rennes winger Amine Gouiri (24), both Ligue 1 clubs have announced. The Algeria international has put pen to paper over a four-and-a-half-year deal with Les Phocéens. Marseille’s outlay to sign Gouiri reportedly rises to €22m in taking into account €3m worth of performance-related add-ons. The Olympique Lyonnais Academy graduate undertook a medical with OM this Friday. He will wear the No. 9 jersey for his new team. Gouiri is the second player to join Marseille this winter transfer window after centre-back Luiz Felipe.
Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi was enthused at the prospect of working with Gouiri, as he said on Friday during a press conference attended by Get French Football News. “He’s a strong player who could be useful, but he’s still very young. It would be a major purchase”, said the former Sassuolo and Brighton and Hove Albion manager. “He’s a versatile player who can play as a centre-forward, just like when he started his career. He’s a player I’ve known quite well for a long time. He can play in every attacking role, in every position.”
Gouiri’s career in Rennes was in limbo as he failed to nail a regular first-team spot under the tutelage of now-dismissed head coach Jorge Sampaoli. The Algeria international has logged 31 goals and 12 assists in 103 games with Rennes. Les Rouge et Noir broke their record signing in 2022 by acquiring Gouri’s services from Nice in a €28m deal.
