Liverpool have announced the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee that can rise up to €150m.
Wirtz signs a contract at the Premier League champions until 2030, and his move to England makes him the Premier League record signing. Wirtz joined his Leverkusen in 2020 from his local club 1.FC Köln for €200k and now leaves as die Werkself’s record departure.
There may be question marks from some about the fee for the Köln native, but Wirtz is quite comfortably worth the fee. So much so that Bayern Munich, who Liverpool beat in the race for him, were willing to go beyond their means for his signature.
The 22-year-old leaves the Bundesliga as an unbeaten champion in 2023/24 as well as a DFB-Pokal winner in the same season, whilst also winning the Bundesliga Player of the Season. Despite tearing his ACL three years ago, Wirtz managed to rack up 35 goals and 47 assists in 140 Bundesliga games.
On moving to Liverpool, Wirtz said:
“I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”
What Liverpool are getting in Wirtz is a special player who can play centrally but prefers to occupy spaces on the left. The 22-year-old is a deft dribbler who is fun to watch but also has great passing ability and can do his work on the defensive end.
