Olympique de Marseille have confirmed the arrival of Facundo Medina (25) on a season-long loan with an option to buy from RC Lens, marking the club’s third signing of the summer transfer window. The Argentina international follows Angel Gomes and CJ Egan-Riley in making the move to the Vélodrome, as Roberto De Zerbi continues to shape his squad in his second season at the helm – with a notable return to the UEFA Champions League bringing about the necessity for a rebuilt defence for the 2025-2026 season.
Medina, born in Villa Fiorito, came through the youth ranks at River Plate before breaking into senior football with Talleres de Córdoba in 2018. His rise in Argentina quickly caught the attention of European clubs, with Lens securing his signature in 2020 as they returned to Ligue 1.
Over four seasons in northern France, the left-footed defender established himself as a mainstay in Franck Haise’s backline, amassing 131 appearances and 5 goals in all competitions. He played a key role in Lens’ remarkable second-place finish in 2022/23, which secured Champions League football, and earned three caps for the Argentina national team during his time with Les Sang et Or.
Medina landed in Marseille on Tuesday afternoon, arriving from Spain where he had been undergoing personal pre-season preparations. He was greeted by OM staff and a group of fans at Marignane airport, braving the summer heat to welcome their new recruit.
Speaking to La Provence, after landing in Marseille Medina outlined his ambitions: “I’m coming to OM to win titles,” he stated, flanked by his lawyer Sevan Karian and proudly wearing a club scarf.
At Marseille, he will link up with fellow Argentine and current captain Leonardo Balerdi, potentially forming a new-look partnership at the heart of De Zerbi’s defence.GFFN | George Boxall
