The long wait is finally done, but it was never really in doubt. Barcelona midfielder Pedri Gonzalez has renewed his contract with the club until 2030 as confirmed by the club earlier today.
“FC Barcelona and the player, Pedro González “Pedri”, have agreed on a contract renewal and he is set to stay with the Club until 30 June 2030,” the official statement reads.
“The Blaugrana midfielder signed his new contract today in the presence of FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, first vice-president Rafa Yuste, and the Club’s director of football Anderson Luis de Souza ‘Deco’.”
The Canary Islander joined Barcelona from Las Palmas in 2019 for a fee of €5 million but was loaned back to his former club until the end of the season. He thus arrived only in July 2020 and broke records right from the get-go.
In just his first season at the club, Pedri proved to be immovable from the Catalan starting lineup and even became a regular for the Spanish national team.
As a result of the overload of minutes thrust on him, however, he then suffered a difficult period where he faced repeated injuries and simply could not string together games at stretch.
Now, under Hansi Flick, Pedri is back to his physical best and has played all of Barcelona’s games this season barring one match being missed through gastro-enteritis.
The midfielder’s old contract was set to expire in the summer of 2026, but his new deal now sees him obligated to the club until 2030 at least. Needless to say, however, he will be at the club for many years beyond that given his talent.
