Another promising Arsenal Academy graduate is stepping into the next chapter of her career, as Freya Godfrey has completed a permanent move to London City Lionesses, following a successful loan spell last season.
The 20-year-old forward, who joined Arsenal at just 12 years old in 2017, has been a regular standout in the youth ranks for several years. She signed her first professional contract with the club in June 2023, marking the culmination of a long journey through the Arsenal Academy.
Freya made her senior debut for the Gunners in May 2023, coming off the bench in a Women’s Super League win against Brighton & Hove Albion. Later that year, she made her European debut as a second-half substitute in Arsenal’s 3-1 Champions League victory away to Valerenga in December 2024.
Despite only making three first-team appearances for Arsenal, the young playmaker showed great promise during her loan spell at London City Lionesses in the second half of last season. Competing in the Barclays Women’s Championship, she provided three assists in eight games, playing a crucial role in the club’s promotion to the WSL.
Now, with London City preparing for top-flight football, Godfrey has returned to the club permanently, bringing her time at Arsenal to a respectful close.

A technically gifted attacking midfielder with an eye for a pass and calmness in the final third, Freya had previously spoken about her ambitions to play regularly and help push her team to success. In July, she shared her goals for the upcoming season.
While it’s bittersweet to see her leave, this move could give her exactly that platform. Arsenal, stacked with senior attacking options, were always going to find it difficult to offer her the consistent minutes she craved.
We wish Freya Godfrey all the very best as she embarks on this exciting new WSL journey.
