The 36-year-old has been unhappy with his situation at Hillsborough for a while and is now on the cusp of being free of his duties at Wednesday.

Rohl has been linked with the vacant manager position at Leicester City, with his release clause now set at £1 million.

Compensation fees have prevented Rohl from moving to a new club earlier in the window, but with this amount reduced his departure now seems to be much more realistic.

The German boss was adored by supporters during his two seasons as the Owls’ boss, dragging them from the foot of the Championship up to 12th place last year, but the relationship has since soured with Rohl making his intention to leave painfully obvious.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and ex-EFL striker, Don Goodman, believes that the manager’s departure isn’t a good thing for Wednesday amid their current ownership status.

Danny Rohl exit not good news for Sheffield Wednesday

“It’s not good news,” stated Goodman. “It's not really the way I want to describe it if Danny Rohl were to leave Sheffield Wednesday.

“If Dejphon Chansiri were to leave Sheffield Wednesday, that would be good news, especially from the fans' perspective.

“Having said all of that, it almost seems inevitable that Rohl will leave. Where he'll go remains to be seen. But the club are in limbo all over the place, in reality, because plans should have been laid down for pre-season, for player recruitment.

“Of course, that can't happen with the transfer embargo now. So, I would say Rohl leaving is not good news for Sheffield Wednesday fans.”

Sheffield Wednesday have a huge task on their hands

The summer of 2025 has been a nightmare for Sheffield Wednesday supporters; one they would like to wake up from sooner rather than later.

Alongside their current embargo and three-window ban on paying transfer fees, the Owls will soon also be on the hunt for a new manager.

The current state of Sheffield Wednesday won’t exactly dress up as an attractive proposal for managers the world over, which means that they may have to settle for a less-than-ideal appointment later this summer.

Other clubs in the Championship have been preparing meticulously for the 2025/26 campaign, bringing in new signings and tying down their current stars to fresh contracts.

The Owls haven’t been able to do any of this and if the saga draws on any longer, they seriously run the risk of falling way behind the other 23 second-tier clubs.
