Josh Sargent has been heavily linked with a move away from Carrow Road this summer
Norwich City have received yet another boost in their aims of retaining Josh Sargent's services this summer as Burnley outline their stance regarding the USMNT forward.
That is according to a fresh update from journalist Alan Nixon via Patreon, with the American not short of interest from clubs in the Premier League and across Europe in the opening weeks of the current transfer window following yet another successful Championship season which, once again, wasn't without injury issues.
The Canaries are preparing for their first campaign under the management of Liam Manning after the 39-year-old moved to his hometown club in June, with Norwich hoping for a major improvement on last term's 13th-place finish, despite the goalscoring prowess of Sargent and Borja Sainz, who is set to join Porto imminently for a £14.25m fee.
Sargent has an even higher valuation placed on his services. But, that has somewhat put a dent in the Clarets' aims of bolstering their own frontline following an immediate return to the top-flight, which will undoubtedly delight the masses at Carrow Road.
Sargent moved to Norwich for £8m from Werder Bremen in August 2021 on a four-year contract, and after finding it extremely tough during the club's most-recent relegation season, has since netted 44 goals in just 98 second tier outings.
The likes of Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have all been credited with interest in recent months, before Football League World exclusively revealed that Burnley had joined the long list of potential suitors looking to move for the 25-year-old, which also includes Serie A giants, Roma.
The chances of a move to the Italian capital have shrunk as 'I Giallorossi' target a raid for Brighton striker, Evan Ferguson, and it has now been reported in Nixon's aforementioned update that, whilst Norwich are sticking to their guns when it comes to a £20m price tag, it is more than Scott Parker's outfit are willing to part with in order to fend off strong competition.
The report does continue to state that whilst the Missouri-born centre-forward is likely to be the subject of continued interest, the East Lancashire club could still be the side who come closest to the aforementioned price tag between now and the close of transfer business on September 1.
Sargent still has plenty of time left on his current deal at Carrow Road though, having signed his most recent contract extension in October 2023, which runs until the summer of 2028.
The Canaries have conducted some smart transfer business in the extremely short period of Manning's reign thus far, which includes the capture of 23-year-old Danish forward, Mathias Kvistgaarden from Brondby for a reported initial fee of £6.9m.
He netted 23 goals in all competitions last term, and could be viewed as an ideal replacement for Sargent. However, the club's chances of reaching the play-offs once again after finishing sixth in 2023/24 would be significantly boosted if the new man and one of the division's most lethal finishers struck up a formidable partnership with one another, especially after losing the creative force of Sainz - who scored 18 times in 41 league appearances last season.
It remains to be seen if Burnley, alongside other clubs, will be willing to match the aforementioned price tag as the transfer window draws on, which, in turn, could see it set slightly higher if a bidding war involving several sides was to commence, as teams become desperate to secure some of the hottest properties on the market.
