Inter Milan aren’t likely to sign a defender during the January transfer window despite the fitness problems of Francesco Acerbi.
This according to today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.
Inter defender Francesco Acerbi has started to look less and less reliable in terms of his fitness.
The former Lazio and Sassuolo defender has suffered two thigh strains so far this season.
The first sidelined Acerbi for a few weeks in October and November. Then, he picked up the second in November – and hasn’t returned from it yet.
The way that Acerbi’s recovery process has dragged on has been a big worry.
Initially, the 36-year-old’s thigh strain didn’t look to be very serious. He had even hoped to be back on the pitch within a couple weeks.
However, Acerbi was not even in a matchday squad until a couple weeks ago.
And then, the Italian international has not actually played. He has not always trained fully, and had to pull out of the squad for yesterday’s Champions League outing against Sparta Prague.
Therefore, there is no clear sign as to when Acerbi will be able to return, and whether he’ll truly be fit and at his best when he does.
That is a big worry particularly considering that Acerbi is now well into his thirties.
As such, there have been rumours that Inter may feel that they have choice but to dip into the transfer market.
Reports have indicated that the Nerazzurri are considering signing a defender who can bolster the depth in the middle of their back three.
But according to Tuttosport, that is unlikely to happen.
Inter do not sense any good opportunities to sign a defender this month. The January transfer window is always tricky.
Therefore, Tuttosport reports, Inter are not planning to rush into a panic signing.
Rather, the Nerazzurri view Yann Bisseck as a player capable of playing in the centre of the back three if Acerbi is unavailable.
