Bild and Sky Germany report that former Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich head coach Niko Kovac is in the running to be appointed interim manager for the rest of the season at Borussia Dortmund.
It is said Kovac is the current favourite as more long-term solutions have reservations about joining Dortmund. Erik ten Hag does not want to return to football so soon after his departure from Manchester United earlier this season while Roger Schmidt is seen as a potential dream candidate but he has reservations about the club’s current structure.
Kovac has already been discussed internally at Dortmund as he has a track record of being able to get teams back on track and be firm in leading his team.
The former midfielder, if he does a good enough job, could be offered the role long-term as well. While Bild suggests that Niko could bring his brother Robert onto the coaching staff as Robert is a former player at Dortmund.
Kovac has been without a job since being fired by Wolfsburg last season, whilst he has also had spells at Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich in Germany. Kovac recently turned down Besiktas.
Under-19 head coach Mike Tullberg will be in charge of their game against Werder Bremen on Saturday following the sacking of Nuri Şahin earlier today.
