Nico Williams has reached an agreement with Barcelona on a six-year deal with the club.
Personal terms have been agreed between Barcelona and the Athletic Bilbao player, with the former set to activate Williams’ release clause at the San Mames Stadium.
Barcelona failed in a bid to sign Williams last summer but have returned with renewed interest. Fabrizio Romano is reporting that terms have now been agreed with the 22-year-old on a contract that will run until June 2031. Williams is set to earn around €8m per season in Catalonia.
Barcelona must now agree a financial package with Athletic Club to seal the transfer. Williams has a release clause in the region of €58m (£49.5m). Discussions will take place over the structure of the deal.
Williams emerged as the top target for Barcelona with several of the Catalan side’s players, including Lamine Yamal, having endorsed the move.
The former starred alongside Yamal as Spain won Euro 2024 last summer, scoring in the 2-1 final win over England.
Last season, the winger scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions, as Athletic secured a top-four finish in La Liga and reached the Europa League semi-finals.
Bayern Munich had been interested in signing Williams, while the Spaniard had been a transfer target for several Premier League teams. However, he has given priority to Barcelona with the Spanish champions closing in on a deal.
Bayern are set to turn their attention to Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma.
