Newcastle United want former Arsenal assistant sporting director Jason Ayto as their next sporting director, according to the Telegraph.
The 40-year-old left the Gunners at the end of last season following a stint as interim sporting director, and he has been identified by Newcastle as a prime contender to replace Paul Mitchell.
The Magpies are searching for a new sporting director after Mitchell officially left yesterday.
He announced his departure in May, and Ayto has impressed the club following his work at Arsenal, where he spent a decade.
He started his Arsenal career as a scout and video analyst, rising through the ranks to become former sporting director Edu’s right-hand man.
Ayto would oversee the recruitment of players, negotiating contracts and work closely with manager Eddie Howe on the long-term strategy for the team.
Dubbed ‘phenomenal‘ by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, Ayto was a contender to replace Edu permanently before the Gunners appointed Andrea Berta.
The fluent Portuguese speaker is well-regarded in European football circles, and his addition to Newcastle could be significant given what he brings to the table.
Newcastle have yet to make any summer signings, and his arrival could help speed things up in the coming weeks as they prepare for Champions League football next term.
Ayto was heavily involved in discussions over the signings of Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino in 2024.
He also laid the groundwork for the imminent arrival of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
Newcastle have not had luck with recent sporting directors, with Dan Ashworth leaving for Manchester United after two years and Mitchell spending less than a year in the role.
