Newcastle United will look to defend the Women’s Sela Cup against Spanish giants Atlético Madrid this summer.

The Magpies won the inaugural Women’s Sela Cup at St. James’ Park in 2024. Newcastle United played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Italian side AC Milan in normal time before winning the resulting penalty shootout 4-3.

It has now been revealed that Newcastle United will look to defend their title against Atlético Madrid at the 2025 Sela Cup at St. James’ Park in August. The Spaniards will be tough opponents having finished the 2024/2025 finetwork Liga F season in third position behind Real Madrid and champions FC Barcelona.

Speaking after her side’s 2025 Women’s Sela Cup opponents were announced, Newcastle United head coach Becky Langley said “We’re really excited to be taking part in the Sela Cup again this year. It has become a big date to look out for in the pre-season schedule.

“Like AC Milan last season, Atlético are a huge name with exceptional players so it’s a big test but one we’re motivated for.

“We have another big season ahead of us in WSL 2. Matches like this will give us the physical test and type of experience we’ll need to be ready for.

“Every time we have played at St. James’ Park, we have received incredible support and we know it will be the same again in front of our outstanding fans.”

In addition to the women’s fixture, Eddie Howe’s men’s side will also contest a 2025 Sela Cup match against Atlético Madrid.
