Newcastle United official announcement – 20 March 2025:
‘Fans attending the Tyne-Wear derby between Newcastle United Women and Sunderland Women are being offered free transport to St. James’ Park on Sunday, 23rd March, thanks to a sustainable travel initiative driven by the club.
A league-record crowd is anticipated to attend the Barclays Women’s Championship fixture, with the club also set to break their record of 28,565 for a women’s game.
Supporters are encouraged to take advantage of free public transport to and from the match – facilitated by Newcastle City Council and Nexus – designed to reduce fans’ carbon footprint on matchday.
Available to all supporters three hours prior to kick-off, until the end of service, fans simply need to present their match ticket or season card when using public transport throughout Tyne and Wear, via the Tyne and Wear Metro and Arriva, Stagecoach, Go North East bus services.
The travel offer builds on Newcastle United’s initiative with local transport operators, having established the ‘Magpie Mover’ scheme which provides season ticket holders with unlimited travel on the metro, bus and ferry during home matchdays, at a cost of just £25 per season.
Collaboration with local transport operators supports the club’s aims to raise awareness of sustainability and encourage change in behaviours to benefit the environment.
On matchday, a waste recycling operation will be in place at the stadium, with a team of green ambassadors working around the Gallowgate End to promote recycling and educate fans about positive sustainable actions.
Fans can also play a part in enhancing sustainability by donating unwanted or pre-loved football boots, which will be recycled by the Ashington Boot Room and rehomed with young aspiring footballers in the North East. A temporary recycling point will be located within the official club store at St. James’ Park, available 90 minutes prior to kick-off.
Helen Hughes, Sustainability Manager at Newcastle United, commented: “Aligning with the Magpie Mover scheme, we’re once again offering a transport initiative which will save fans money while encouraging sustainable travel options.
“We’re pleased to build on the success of last season’s free travel weekend – with a 28 per cent decrease in occupancy at a nearby public car park suggesting the scheme helped to reduce car journeys – by offering fans additional opportunities to adopt sustainable actions upon arrival at the stadium, through recycling education ambassadors and our boot drive initiative.”
