Whilst Sunday was also the last day of the 2023/24 season accounting period for Newcastle United.

Midnight came and Anthony Gordon was not forced out in a desperate last-gasp sale, instead, Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson dealt that fate…

Craig Hope of The Mail – 1 July 2024:

“Without the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, I understand Newcastle United would have faced a points deduction of potentially 10 points for breaching PSR.

“That is why the sale of Anthony Gordon was the last-resort option to solving the issue, and at one point it felt like it could happen.”

It will be one of those, where we’ll never ever know how close Newcastle United potentially came to selling an Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, or whoever.

Reported transfer fees of £35m for Elliot Anderson and £33m for Yankuba Minteh, seemingly enough to get Newcastle United across the PSR line and avoid any possible points deduction.

Speaking of which, it is such an unknown just what could/would have happened if Newcastle United were deemed to have breached PSR for the three year period of 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2024.

November 2023 – Announced Everton deducted ten points, later reduced to six points on appeal

March 2024 – Nottingham Forest deducted four points

March 2024 – Everton deducted another two points

March 2024 – Leicester City was also charged with breaching PSR but is yet to have the case heard and any subsequent punishment handed down if found guilty

Again, we will never know, but difficult to see that any leniency would have been shown to Newcastle United, so exactly how many points NUFC would have seen deducted, your guess as good as mine…
