Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are in talks over a deal involving two players.

Both Sky Sports and The Telegraph both state that the deal under discussion is for Anthony Elanga to head to St James’ Park, with Elliot Anderson potentially heading to the City Ground.

They report that Eddie Howe is looking to strengthen his attacking options and 22 year old Elanga’s versatility appeals, with the former Man U player having played across the front three this season.

Meanwhile, Nuno Espirito Santo is claimed to be keen on Anderson, as Forest look to strengthen in midfield and wants the 21-year-old Geordie.

It is also of course a lot (all?) to do with PSR, with both clubs claimed to be needing to bring in revenue this weened to put them the right side of PSR, the deadline for this season’s accounts and the latest three year accounting period is end of this month, on Sunday.

Elliot Anderson has featured largely in transfer stories this month, including a week ago when Newcastle United were reported (see below) to be trying to do a deal for Max Kilman, with Anderson going the other way.

A lot of fans (not surprisingly) are confused about a lot of these transfer deals, especially the PSR angle.

Elliot Anderson, like all homegrown players, is the ultimate when it comes to helping on the PSR side, as he would represent 100 per cent profit for Newcastle.

So lets say Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest agreed that both players were valued at £25m each.

For PSR, Newcastle United could then take £25m instantly off their current losses figure for this season and the overall last three year period.

Whilst the £25m for Anthony Elanga, Newcastle could then spread (amortise) that over five years worth of accounts, where it would count as £5m to their losses over each of the five seasons.

You don’t want to see any Newcastle United player of value/potential leave. However, with clearly it seems one or more player need to be sold this weekend, far better it be an Elliot Anderson rather than an Alexander Isak or Anthony Gordon. Though of course as fans, we are in the total dark as to exactly how much Newcastle United to bring in to sort the PSR shortfall.

As well as the Elliot Anderson and Anthony Elanga reports, it is also claimed that Yankuba Minteh may also potentially go to Forest.

The Mag report – 22 June 2024:

Newcastle United have made a bid to sign Max Kilman.

The normally very reliable John Percy at The Telegraph reporting that Eddie Howe and NUFC have made an offer to sign the Wolves defender.

West Ham United made a £25m offer for Max Kilman on Friday but that was rejected, Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui was fomally manager at Wolves and so knows the qualities of the player well.

The man at The Telegraph says that the offer from Newcastle United was an unspecified cash amount plus Elliot Anderson.

However, Wolves are said to have rejected this opening Newcastle offer.

Wolves are in a strong position when it comes to the player’s contract, after turning down a £30m bid from Napoli last summer (2023), Max Kilman was persuaded to sign a new five year contract running through to end of June 2028.

The 27 year old arrived from Maidenhad back in 2018 and a further complication is that they have a sell-on clause, which could be as high as 20% of any profit Wolves would make on the defender.

It would be no surprise to see Eddie Howe interested in a tried and tested central defender such as the left footed Max Kilman.

Plus, after the injury situation last season at St James’ Park in 2023/24, the fact that Max Kilman played every minute of all 38 Premier League matches for Wolves last season, is a big positive. That following on from the 2022/23 season where Kilman started 37 PL matches and was an unused sub in the other.

Manchester United are also claimed to be one of a number of clubs interested in Max Kilman, with Wolves said to value him at £40m+.

I have seen some negative comments from Newcastle United fans reacting to this transfer exclusive, with regard to the claim that Elliot Anderson has been offered as part of a deal.

To be honest, I am open minded about it.

I have no idea as to whether Elliot Anderson has been offered up as part of any transfer but if this is the way Eddie Howe would want to go, then fine by me.

I really like Elliot Anderson BUT then I like a lot of the Newcastle United players and the truth is, that Anderson and many others are not automatic first choice players if everybody is fit. He is only 21 and has great potential but the reality is that the likes of Joelinton, Tonali and Willock will all be competing for a place in the team next season after their troubles last season, which then squeezes others out to the bench or even the outer edges of the squad.
