Newcastle stars Bruno Guimaraes and Harvey Barnes have dedicated the club’s 4-1 win over Manchester United to absent manager Eddie Howe.
Howe was hospitalised on Friday due to an unspecified illness. The Newcastle manager had missed much of the week’s training after becoming unwell. He has since been undergoing tests.
In his absence on Sunday, Newcastle produced an outstanding performance to climb back into the Champions League places. The Magpies thrashed Manchester United at St James’ Park, with Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes (2) and Bruno Guimaraes all on target.
The win moves Newcastle up to fourth in the table and completes a first league double over Manchester United in 94 years.
Speaking to Premier League Productions, goalscorers Guimaraes and Barnes said Newcastle were determined to perform for their absent manager.
“When we went to the pitch we said we will play for him (Howe). He has been part of our success, he’s been unbelievable for us,” Guimaraes said.
“We missed him on the training ground this week. Hopefully it gave him happiness and he’s back for the next game. It’s been a tough week for him.”
“He’s on the road to recovery hopefully,” Barnes added.
“He’s so influential throughout the week and on matchday. We knew we had a job to do without him, we said before the game we had to put a smile on his face.”
