Newcastle United have agreed a £69m club-record deal to sign Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade.

Eddie Howe is closing in on the signing of the Germany international in a huge boost, following a frustrating summer in the transfer market.

Woltemade had been a target for Bayern Munich but the German champions were unable to agree a fee with their Bundesliga rivals. Newcastle have now swooped in with an agreement reached.

The Magpies will pay an initial £65m fee for the 23-year-old, potentially rising to £69m with add-ons. It will eclipse the previous club record of £63m paid to Real Sociedad for Alexander Isak in 2022.

Woltemade enjoyed a breakout campaign last season after signing for Stuttgart on a free transfer. The 6ft 6in forward was named Bundesliga Newcomer of the Season after scoring 17 times in all competitions.

Woltemade was the tournament’s leading scorer as Stuttgart won the DFB-Pokal, ending an 18-year trophy drought, before winning the Golden Boot at this summer’s u-21 European Championship.

He has scored 13 goals in 18 games for Germany at u-21 level and has won two senior caps.

Newcastle have been pursuing a forward all summer, following Callum Wilson’s departure and Alexander Isak’s desire to leave St James’ Park.

The Magpies have insisted their pursuit of a striker was to support – and not replace – Isak, who has been subject of interest from Liverpool. The Swedish striker is currently training alone as he looks to engineer a move to Anfield.
