Newcastle United are monitoring PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko as they look to strengthen their squad in the January transfer window, according to the Telegraph.

The 21-year-old has impressed in the Eredivisie this season, bagging five goals and one assist in 14 appearances.

His performances have attracted interest from several top European clubs, including Newcastle.

While a January move for Bakayoko will not be easy due to PSV’s reluctance to sell a key player mid-season, Newcastle’s recruitment team and manager Eddie Howe are keen on him.

They believe the Belgian international would be a valuable addition to the Magpies’ attacking options.

Newcastle are reportedly switching their transfer strategy under sporting director Paul Mitchell. The club is now focusing on younger, high-potential players who can offer long-term value.

Players such as Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo have been scouted, but their high price tags make them unrealistic targets for January.

Newcastle’s financial constraints remain a significant factor in their transfer plans. They need to generate funds through player sales to make significant signings.

Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier are potential candidates for departure, which could free up valuable funds for the club to invest in new players.

They could also sell Harvey Barnes. The 27-year-old has struggled to break into the first team despite netting five goals and one assist this season, with Anthony Gordon firmly ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Magpies would love to keep Barnes, but they know Premier League rivals will look to offer him playing time, potentially enticing him away.

Newcastle can recoup a decent amount for the former Leicester City star. With Abdul Fatawu injured, the Foxes may consider a move. Aston Villa and Brentford are other potential destinations.
