Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez as the Magpies look to bolster their ranks, according to reports from Spain.
Newcastle are still in the market for reinforcement and have reportedly turned to the exciting La Masia product.
It remains to be seen if they can complete a deal to bring him to Tyneside.
Lopez would be a stellar addition to the Newcastle engine room. His ability to connect midfield to attack is remarkable, and he has a killer instinct in the final third.
Lauded as an underrated player by former Barca star Pedro Rodriguez, the 22-year-old is a hard worker in the centre of the park and will fit in nicely in Eddie Howe’s tactical plans.
The Newcastle target bagged eight goals and 10 assists in 48 appearances last season for Barca. However, he remains behind Gavi, Pedri, and Dani Olmo in the pecking order.
Lopez has only played 45 minutes for Barca this season after two games, and the Magpies are ready to capitalise and snap him up.
The report says the Toons are willing to pay as high as €100 million to sign the Spanish international (two caps), with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea also interested in his services.
But it would be senseless for Newcastle to splash that kind of money on Lopez, no matter how elite his talent may be.
The Toons must be smarter in their recruitment and not get carried away by hype or potential resale value.
They are already on the verge of committing a hefty sum to bring in Nick Woltemade, another risky and expensive bet.
Doubling down with a €100m move for Lopez would be reckless.
Newcastle need to show restraint in this market and instead explore other, more attainable targets that can strengthen Howe’s squad without draining resources.
