West Brom are set to turn down an offer of around €6.5m from Bologna for star man Torbjorn Heggem.
West Brom have received an offer of €6.5m for Torbjorn Heggem from Bologna, but talks are ongoing as the club seek around €10m for their classy defender.
Heggem only joined the Baggies last year from Swedish side Brommapojkarna, and whilst it was a disappointing campaign for the side as a whole, the Norwegian was hugely impressive.
Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that he is attracting interest, particularly as he is a left-footed defender who is comfortable at centre-back or at full-back.
And, the Athletic have revealed that Albion have had their first formal offer for Heggem, with Serie A side Bologna looking to bring Heggem to Italy.
They explain that a €6.5m offer has been made, but that is expected to be rejected by the Midlands outfit, who feel that is lower than his true value.
The update adds that Albion want to keep their best players as they look to back Ryan Mason with a team that can challenge for promotion, but ‘big-money offers could change that stance’.
It has also been claimed by the Express & Star that the Baggies are negotiating over a £10m deal for Heggem, which would represent a major profit on a player they paid just £500,000 for.
This is obviously a concern for West Brom, as Heggem is a class act, and many would consider him as one of the best players at the club, so selling him would be a big blow.
However, the chance to join Bologna is going to appeal, as the league is a major step up, and, in a World Cup year, Heggem will feel that could be the perfect move for him at this stage in his career.
But every player has a price, and George Campbell could be seen as a potential replacement, so you could make the case that Albion might benefit if they put that money into other areas of the squad.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out, but all Albion can do is make sure that they get the best possible fee, and most would agree that €6.5m is way below his market value.
