Danny Rohl's impending Sheffield Wednesday has to happen sooner rather than later
Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday exit is nearing and supporters will not be happy to see him go but the sooner it happens the better.
According to The Star, the Owls are in talks with the German amid the uncertainty over his future with the club, and his imminent exit might be good news for the Yorkshire outfit despite his popularity.
The 36-year-old has been lauded for his time at Hillsborough, lifting the team out of the relegation zone and into mid-table over the course of a season-and-a-half.
In that time, he has become incredibly popular among supporters, with his attractive brand of football leading to positive results and great positivity around the squad.
However, the negativity surrounding the club off the pitch, in particular due to owner Dejphon Chansiri, has put a dark cloud over recent months, and an exit by Rohl is now inevitable.
It’s been obvious for some time now that Rohl’s time at Sheffield Wednesday wasn’t going to last much longer, much to the dismay of fans.
However, it is now reaching a point where the longer the uncertainty over his future drags on the worse of an impact it could have on the team’s upcoming season.
It is understood that talks are being held to find a solution for this situation, with an exit seen as the likeliest outcome, which should now come as a relief to fans despite their sadness at his departure.
With the players returning for pre-season on Thursday, Sheffield Wednesday are now facing the possibility that there will be no head coach in place for a significant part of their preparation for the next campaign.
Clubs like Bristol City, Norwich City and QPR have all opted to change managers over the summer, and acted quickly enough to have their replacements lined up before the players returned from their holidays.
But Sheffield Wednesday are now at severe risk of the players returning to the training ground without anyone in charge to oversee their development, unless they act fast.
That would be a disastrous way to start preparation for a new season, especially with so much uncertainty surrounding their financial situation and Chansiri’s ownership.
A decision needs to be reached with Rohl quickly so that they can move on and appoint his successor.
Chansiri’s ownership of Sheffield Wednesday has not been popular with fans for quite some time, but it is reaching a significant boiling point now.
The loss of Rohl will only further accelerate their desire to see the Thai businessman leave the club for good.
The club have been placed under a registration embargo after being charged by the EFL due to the late payment of wages in two of the last three months.
The Owls have also been handed a transfer ban until January 2027, which means the new manager will struggle to leave his mark on the squad.
This is set to be a difficult period for the club, especially as long as Chansiri remains the owner, so making things even worse by delaying Rohl’s inevitable exit would be misguided.
Supporters will be bitterly disappointed to see him go, but it’s hard to blame him for seeking better pastures — and now the sooner the better.
