Netflix has secured broadcasting rights for the 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cup in the region of the United States.
An official statement from FIFA described the deal as a “landmark” in the history of football but did not disclose its financial details. In addition to offering live coverage of the games, Netflix will produce exclusive documentaries ahead of the respective tournaments to showcase the personalities who have led to the international growth of women’s football.
After announcing the news, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “This is a landmark moment for sports media rights. As a marquee brand and FIFA’s new long-term partner, Netflix has shown a very strong level of commitment to growing women’s football. This agreement sends a strong message about the real value of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the global women’s game. FIFA and Netflix partnering together make this a truly historic day for broadcasting and for women’s football.”
Netflix is known for its compelling sports documentaries and recently they have jumped on the live broadcasting industry, airing the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson alongside Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano, which became the most watched professional women’s sport in U.S. history with an audience of over 74 million.
Netflix are set to broadcast two NFL games on Christmas Day – Kansas City Chiefs against Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens versus Houston Texans.
The Netflix live streaming service has faced a few roadblocks like buffering during events but everything is expected to be streamlined and fixed to bring the Womens’ World Cup in the best fashion possible.
