Mykhailo Mudryk is now officially a Chelsea player.

In the biggest and most dramatic transfer saga of the January window, the Blues essentially reiterated that they’re on a crazy shopping spree by jumping the queue to beat Arsenal to his signature.

Fabrizio Romano had long since reported that the 22-year-old preferred a move to Emirates Stadium, but always caveated that Shakhtar Donetsk were holding out for truly eye-watering figures.

Have Chelsea signed Mudryk?

And although the Gunners were slowly moving in the right direction, it feels as though Todd Boehly has once again thought: “screw it,” and loosened his purse strings to meet the asking price.

All this culminated in Romano giving the transfer his legendary ‘Here we go’ seal of approval on Saturday, confirming that Shakhtar would indeed get the €100 million package that they were always hoping for.

This was then followed up by an official statement from the west London club, which read: “Chelsea are discussing terms with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Mykhailo Mudryk.

“Should a deal be agreed between the two clubs then the Ukrainian international, who can operate as a winger or a forward, will discuss personal terms with the Blues ahead of a permanent transfer.”

Where did Chelsea legend Didier Drogba start his career?

For a club who had just signed Joao Felix on a lucrative loan deal and look set to wrap up a move for Christopher Nkunku in the summer, the signing of Mudryk for a truly head-spinning fee really does make it feel as though Boehly is playing fantasy football.

However, like it or lump it, Chelsea seem to have gotten their hijacking mission over the line and now it’s time to envisage how Mudryk will actually shape up in the English top-flight.

And, well, there’s a word of warning for Chelsea fans who are getting ahead of themselves with securing one of the biggest Premier League deals in history from right under Arsenal‘s nose.

Is Mudryk a good signing for Chelsea?

That’s because Twitter user @EBL2017, who is an ‘experienced Performance Analyst at international and club level’, has pumped the brakes on the hype train with their thread breaking down Chelsea’s move.

Besides, as much as Mudryk has become a familiar name amongst transfer columns, there are still plenty of football fans who are catching up on what exactly the Ukrainian is like as a player.

And not only does @EBL2017 shed light on that aspect of the move, but also damningly points to many of the issues that make it feel like Mudryk moving to Chelsea as opposed to Arsenal could prove to be catastrophic.

Entering a project in its infancy as opposed to in its endgame, there are no shortage of potential complications that should temper expectations surrounding Mudryk to Chelsea, so be sure to check out the full thread below:

Should Mudryk have signed for Chelsea or Arsenal?

It’s all very, very messy, isn’t it?

It doesn’t half seem as though Boehly is trying to shove a fistful of square pegs into a round hole at the moment with near enough very signing made by the club not appearing to have a natural home in Graham Potter’s system.

And @EBL2017 makes the very pertinent point that Mudryk could well be thrown in the deep end within his first few weeks and months as the Blues scramble around for points by any means.

As such, for all of Mudryk’s undoubted talent and ability, there’s the risk that fans will get on his back and throw his price tag back at him if he doesn’t hit the ground running because there could well be scant team success to hide behind.

At the end of the day, though, what’s perhaps most telling is that a lot of those points are intuitive: it just feels riskier, trickier and more precarious moving to Chelsea over Arsenal.

Then again, they say pressure makes diamonds, so Mudryk will have to hope he can prove that he’s the gem he’s made out to be before the ever-moving conveyor belt at Chelsea chews him up.
