Rangers manager Philippe Clement needs to make a big decision on the captaincy situation.
Ibrox skipper James Tavernier has been a great servant all these years, and he has probably achieved legendary status at the Glasgow club.
However, the 33-year-old is not playing regularly, and while Clement acknowledges his importance to the side, he has put faith in other players in his position.
Barry Ferguson wrote a column for the Daily Record earlier this week, where he sympathised with Tavernier’s current plight.
At the same time, he added that there are other players who can step up if Tavernier loses his captaincy, such as John Souttar and Connor Barron.
Journalist Keith Jackson has suggested that Clement should give the captain’s armband to someone else permanently.
Writing for the Daily Record, Jackson has made a point that it doesn’t serve any good to the team if the skipper is not playing regularly.
In fact, he thinks that Tavernier never looked like a natural captain, whereas Jack Butland looks ‘more suited’ to the role.
Jackson is spot on here. Tavernier has been a magnificent player for the club, and no Rangers defender will likely match his goals and assists records.
He was linked with a move away from Rangers in the summer window, and there is a high chance that this could be his last season at the club.
Butland has been a consistent performer for the Gers since he joined from Crystal Palace, and he deserves a chance to lead the side permanently.
