Mo Salah reportedly turned down the chance to earn £500 million, preferring to sign a new contract with Liverpool.

The Egyptian winger’s future had been a source of major speculation as he entered the final months of his deal with the club, particularly after he revealed he was “more out than in” back in November.

Liverpool fans were finally put at ease on Thursday when it was announced that Salah had indeed put pen to paper on a new two-year contract, which is estimated will earn him £400,000 per annum.

The 32-year-old, though, could have raked in a far greater sum had he chosen to move to Saudi Arabia, with BBC Sport claiming he would have been in line to earn half a billion pounds.

Salah was the subject of a £150m bid from Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ittihad in 2023, which Liverpool rejected outright. The spectre of a move to west Asia hung in the background until March, when a breakthrough in negotiations between the Merseyside outfit and the player’s representatives was reached.

Salah always wished to remain at Anfield as he put sporting ambition above his paypacket. An exit wasn’t out of the question, but he will now take his time at the club to a full decade when his new deal runs out.

“Of course I’m very excited,” he said after signing his contract extension. “We have a great team now. Before also we had a great team. But I signed because I think we have a chance to win other trophies and enjoy my football.

“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played eight years, hopefully it’s going to be 10. Enjoying my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years in my career.

“I would like to say to [the fans], I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.”
