Rafael Leao believes Real Madrid ace Vinicius Jr deserved to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or and insists he cares more about team results because individual honours are ‘a consequence.’

Leao spoke about Milan’s targets and their recent Supercoppa victory in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

He also discussed his personal objectives, such as the Ballon d’Or.

“It’s obvious [that it’s a target], but winning team trophies is the most important thing to me,” said the Portugal international.

“The Ballon d’Or is a consequence of team results. This is why my ambition is to win the Champions League and to do that, I must make a difference in every game and be important to Milan.”

When asked who should win the Ballon d’Or last year, Leao replied: “Vinicius.”

The Brazilian star was expected to win the award in Paris in October, but Spain and Manchester City star Rodri surprisingly beat him.

“We have the ambition to go as far as possible in Europe, but the true Milan is always needed,” continued Leao.

“The Champions League is the best trophy in football and all games will be like finals from now on. We can dream of winning something important. Nothing is impossible.”

During the same interview, Leao spoke about his relationship with Paulo Fonseca, admitting that he expected an explanation for being left on the bench in three consecutive matches.

Leao also praised Fonseca’s successor, Sergio Conceiçao, saying that the ex-Porto coach has brought new energy and mentality.

Milan’s next Serie A match is against Cagliari on Saturday, January 11.
