Manchester City may have already lined up a loan club for recently-signed Norwegian midfield talent Sverre Nypan, according to the player’s father.

The 18-year-old completed a £12.5 million move from Rosenborg earlier this summer, joining up with Manchester City following a breakthrough campaign in the Eliteserien that attracted widespread interest across Europe.

Despite his talent, it has always been expected that Nypan would spend the 2025/26 campaign gaining regular senior experience elsewhere, with a temporary move away from the Etihad Stadium now appearing imminent.

It is believed that City view Nypan as a long-term project, not a player for immediate first-team integration, although until a loan deal is arranged the player is expected to partake in Pep Guardiola’s pre-season training sessions at the City Football Academy.

A loan for Nypan within the City Football Group structure – such as to La Liga side Girona – has been seen as one likely outcome, although other European clubs have shown interest in a player that caught the attention of Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa, and Arsenal prior to his Manchester agreement.

Now speaking in an interview with Norwegian media outlet TV2 this week, Sverre Nypan and his family have conversed about the teenager’s next steps in his career, including comments from his father concerning the midfielder’s loan club to be agreed upon this summer.

“There are eight clubs interested,” Arne Nypan revealed. “I think City already has a club ready for him,” he added.

On the process of deciding upon his loan club, Sverre Nypan explained, “It’s so hard to say. I really thought I should have done it now. It will probably be before the season starts, I guess.

“Other than that it would have been strange. It depends on how it goes and what City thinks. They are the ones who decide.”

Joining the club in a £12.5 million switch from Rosenborg earlier this summer, there have been some concerns in various quarters over the weight of expectation placed on the teenager by the price tag alone. However, Nypan played a cool figure when quizzed on the fact.

“It’s not all that expensive either. It’s not a price tag I think much about, when you see what other players are going for these days. I think it’ll go well,” the midfielder admitted.

From Manchester City’s perspective, the priority remains shielding Nypan from unnecessary pressure while ensuring he continues to grow tactically and physically. While he may eventually slot into the club’s midfield rebuild alongside the likes of Claudio Echeverri, officials are conscious that 2025/26 is far too soon for that level of responsibility.

A move to Girona could offer Nypan the perfect blend of competitive top-flight football and City Football Group oversight, although should one of the eight clubs interested offer guarantees around game time and playing style, a loan outside CFG could still be approved.

Expect clarity on Sverre Nypan’s next step in the coming days or weeks, with the midfielder himself indicating a decision should be finalised before the start of the new competitive campaign – and potentially before City conclude pre-season schedule.
