Mexico defeat Saudi Arabia to reach semi-finals; Honduras stun Panama | OneFootball

The CONCACAF Gold Cup quarter-finals got underway this evening with Mexico among the teams looking to reach the semi-finals.

Here is a round-up of tonight's action.

Mexico defeat Saudi Arabia

Scorers: Vega 49', Madu 81' (OG)

After a very cagey, stop-start first-half, both sides went into the break scoreless.

Despite taking eight shots, Mexico never really tested Saudi goalkeeper in the first-half.

Early in the second-half, Alexis Vega was setup by a clever outside-of-the-foot pass from Raul Jimenez. After an initial save, Vega's shot deflected right back to him for an easy tap-in which, following a VAR review, gave Mexico the lead.

Mexico doubled their advantage late in the match as Mateo Chávez's cross took a deflection off of Abdullah Madu's face and into the back of the net.

Ultimately, the nine-time Gold Cup champions overcame a frustrating first-half to defeat Saudi Arabia 2-0, setting up a semi-final clash against Honduras.

Honduras stun Panama on penalties

Scorers: Díaz 45+1', Lozano 82'

The Panamanians dominated the opening 45 minutes with 10 shots and 71% possession.

At the end of the half, Panama finally opened the scoring after Honduras' Edwin Rodríguez pulled down Cristian Martínez just inside the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty for Panama.

Ismael Díaz stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom-left corner, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Díaz, who leads the tournament's golden boot race, has now scored six of Panama's 11 Gold Cup goals.

Honduras scored a late second-half equaliser as a corner deflected into the path of Carlos Pineda, whose shot took another deflection off Anthony Lozano and in.

At full-time, the match headed straight to penalties.

After Panama were denied the post, Honduras had the chance to win the match but missed their fifth penalty, sending the shootout to sudden death.

Yet, it didn't matter because Eduardo Guerrero's shot sailed over the bar and Carlos Pineda scored the decisive penalty to win it for Honduras.

So, after an unlikely comeback, Honduras advance to face Mexico in the Gold Cup semi-finals.
